The Lost Gardens of
Heligan
Thanks to its more
southerly lying location in the southwest of England, Cornwall
features a milder climate than the rest of the British Isles.
Temperatures here can be a full five degrees Celsius higher than in
much of the rest of Great Britain. Because of the favorable climate
here, horticulture thrives in Cornwall. This makes the region famous
for more than just mystical relics like various henges and
Glastonbury Abbey. A tremendous example of world class horticulture
found in the area is located in the Lost Gardens of Heligan - a
horticulturalist's dream.
These Lost Gardens of Heligan are found at the ancestral home of the
Tremayne family. For in excess of four hundred years now, this
incredibly mysterious estate has been their family seat. The
property is comprised of a thousand glorious acres that saw their
peak at the conclusion of the nineteenth century. Their fortune
waxed and waned in the subsequent years, and after World War I, ivy
and bramble were fighting for mastery of the estate grounds. These
days, the favourite gardens of England provide more than two hundred
acres to be explored. This ranges from productive Victorian Gardens
and the encircling Pleasure Grounds to a woodland that is
sustainably managed, to a Jungle valley of sub tropical theme, to
gorgeous Cornish countryside farmlands and walks. There is even a
cutting edged Wildlife Project based here today. The amount of
gardens and grounds to look at will provide visitors with a full
day's worth of sightseeing and enjoying that will keep them coming
back over the years.

This Jungle of the Lost Gardens is found along the south Cornish
coast, near the fishing village of Mevagissey. It fills a beautiful
steep valley that runs from the estate all the way to the sea. In
the early days, the Tremaynes designed and laid out the garden to
feature a Japanese themed vegetation. Because of the traumatic
intervention of World War I, their plans were never fully realized
and the valley's imported plants had to take care of themselves.
When the project was picked back up many years later, the initial
specimens were still found here, living among a thick tangled
combination of brambles and sycamore trees. All of these invaders
were cleared away so that the sub tropical vegetation could regain
its proper place in the valley. Today, the valley is a thriving lush
garden that presents a gorgeous array of beautiful trees and lovely
foliage. A great number of these plants and trees were brought to
the valley from across the globe by the famed plant hunters of the
Victorian era. Visitors are sure to be impressed by what the valley
has to offer these days.
The micro climate of this jungle is somewhat unique in the Cornwall
area. Thanks to the protection of the steep valley, the temperatures
are usually five degrees Celsius higher than the estate's Northern
Gardens. This makes it easier to maintain the numerous sub tropical
plant species found here. There are bamboo tunnels, a little banana
plantation, avenues that are lined by palm trees, and even a new
addition of an Olive Grove. All of these unusual plants combine
together to conjure up a lush and vibrant environment that will make
all visitors feel as if they have stepped far away from the lands of
the British Isles and their temperate shores.
The Olive Grove is found on the eastern side of the Jungle Garden.
Recently, three more Olive trees have been planted in the Olive
Grove. While it is true that Olive trees, which are naturally
occurring in the lands of the Mediterranean Sea, are not technically
speaking normal species in a Jungle environment, they fit in well in
this part of the valley. The sheltered slopes that face to the south
and the one of a kind micro climate in the jungle valley make for
the most optimal growing conditions for these wonderful trees that
love the sun.
